What’s a Shoupista?

What’s a Shoupista?  I’m glad you asked.  Professor Donald Shoup is a retired Distinguished Professor of Urban Planning from UCLA.  For almost 40 years he has been promoting parking policy that leads to less automobile cruising, more affordable housing, a better allocation of the right of way, and safer streets and sidewalks.  His seminal publication The High Cost of Free Parking has influenced thousands of urban planners, politicians, and citizens to rethink their approach to parking meters, permits, minimums and maximums.

Those planners, politicians, and citizens are known as Shoupistas.

The Sightline Institute has published an excellent 18 part (!) series on this type of parking policy, Parking? Lots! and it is an excellent series.
